NFL - Dublin 5-22 Westmeath 0-10

Dublin handed out a hiding to a very poor Westmeath and maintained their position in Division 1.  On a fine day weather wise the Dubs battered the Westmeath goal from start to finish with the signs ominous from the throwin when Blaine Kelly, very impressive throughout, kicked home an opening minute point and 15 minutes later the Blues were nearly out of sight when Conal Keaney hit the onion sack.  There was time for a yellow card for Kevin Bonner for a very poor challenge & onto the field cam Pat Burke who was to be busy throughout.  It wasn’t long before Fingallians star Paul Flynn got in on the act finishing to the goal and the game was over at half time with the Dubs 17 points clear 2-15, 0-04.  Westmeath knew it wasn’t to be their day when they saw a Glennon penalty well saved by Clucko & went into the dressing room a sorry sight.

There was a lot of interest in seeing whether the Dubs would maintain their focus in the 2nd period and even after a short initial lull, the Dubs powered on.  Of interest to supporters was the decision to place Ciaran Whelan on the edge of the square for a period with Ross McConnell taking on the midfield responsibilities.  Whelo was a handful & with far from his smoothest shot at goal saw the ball hit the net.  Darren Magee showed how it should be done blasting an effort past the Westmeath keeper and Pat Burke got in on the scoring also recording a goal.

All in all a match of men and boys.  Dublin had the biggest winning margin Div. 1 & were the only team to score 5 goals in 1 game.  Division 1 status was retained but little learned about Westmeath.
